Rila Monastery

Monday July 31, 2006
Rila Monastery is one of the most-visited destinations in Bulgaria, both by tourists and by locals. Culturally and religiously important, Rila Monastery is also historically and architecturally significant. Tucked in the Rila Mountains, the complex is built near the cave in which Ivan Rilski, or John of Rila, spent 20 years of his life. You can visit this cave on your excursion to Rila Monastery, take hikes in the Rila mountains, explore the monastery itself, and even stay overnight in monks' cells. Rila Monastery is a must-see for anyone traveling to Bulgaria.

Not far from Sofia, Rila Monastery would make a wonderful day trip or overnight stay before going on to Plovdiv or Stara Zagora. For more information regarding travel to Bulgaria, check out Bulgarian Travel Basics.
