Everything Is Illuminated

Saturday November 18, 2006
The movie Everything Is Illuminated tells the story of an American searching for his grandfather's history in Ukraine. Anyone who has traveled to Eastern Europe for genealogical research might recognize the same secondhand nostalgia experienced by the main character and witness a similar realization of change by seeing the result without having been privy to what was before. You can watch this movie for this reason, for the touching, sometimes funny, sometimes mysterious plot, or for the beautiful Prague countryside that passes for rural Ukraine. Authentic Eastern European touches - from a soundtrack that includes music by the highly controversial Russian group Leningrad to the subtitled Ukrainian banter - make this film especially enjoyable.
