It was previously requested by a reader that a list be provided of Eastern European (Bulgarian in particular) films. Unfortunately, this would be impossible as 1) I am not a foreign film expert and 2) there are lots and lots of Eastern European films that are worth watching that I have either seen or not seen (and sadly do not know about). A third reason is that the list of Eastern European films grows all the time - Eastern European countries, most which suffered under censorship, are now full of talented filmmakers expressing themselves and commentating on their societies through films. Whether you're looking to improve your language skills or learn about the culture, you'll find plenty of films from Eastern Europe that will give you more than you bargained for as far as intellectual stimulation, artistry, and storylines go.
The About.com Guide to World and Independent Film does have a list of Eastern European film reviews to get you started, if you're really overwhelmed by the available movies. Whether you watch these or other films, they will certainly help prepare you for a trip to Eastern Europe, as many tend to represent life and society in the region with startling accuracy.
