Avoid Sports Riots in Russia

Saturday October 20, 2007
According to BBC, Russia has a sports rioting culture that is considered to be one of the most frightening in Europe. Recent riots in Moscow over a soccer match with England left five fans of England's team with injuries. Moscow's officials attempt to curb sports-related violence with strong security measures, but police patrols and hotel security guards are not enough to prevent rioting. Similar incidents have been reported elsewhere in Russia during or following similar sports events. If you're going to Russia to cheer on your favorite sports team, do so with great caution. Don't be tempted into a fight, no matter how strongly you feel about your team. At the first sign of rioting, it's best to inconspicuously leave the area if possible - organized rioting in the past has lead to destruction of property, injury, and death.
