Matryushka Dolls - Russian Souvenirs

Monday April 14, 2008
Matryushka dolls, or Russian nesting dolls, are some of the most popular Russian souvenirs. The dolls can be painted with traditional themes, which can be intricately detailed and are highly collectible. Modern takes on Russian nesting dolls feature political leaders, band members, or cartoon characters. While matryushka dolls are almost ubiquitous in Russian, Ukraine, and elsewhere in Eastern Europe, the original inspiration for nesting dolls came from Japan and first appeared in Russian at the turn of the 20th century.

Other Russian souvenirs, like balalaikas, birchbark crafts, and elements of Russian traditional dress, are also great souvenirs to bring back from your trip to Russia.

I bought some of the nesting dolls in St. Petersburg on the street from a vendor. He was selling them 5 for $20. My grandkids love taking them apart and putting them back together. They are great to display also. The ones in the stores are alot more expensive but of better quality.
