Albania's Sworn Virgins - Women Who Live As Men In A Historically Unequal World

A few Albanian women have historically taken up roles as males in a society that has seen a shortage men, while simultaneously swearing off sex. With the adoption of male gender, the women have also experienced equality with men when they would have otherwise been considered worth little more than animals. Fortunately or unfortunately (the sworn virgins are divided over this issue), gender roles in Albania have evolved in the decades since it became necessary for women to become sworn virgins. They say equality between the genders is emerging, and it is no longer necessary for women to shed their gender in order to enjoy a life of freedom.
