Siberian Wooden Houses and Wooden Architecture of Eastern Europe

Thursday September 25, 2008
Siberia is known for its untouched natural landscape and "frontier" heritage, but it is also home to wooden architectural treasures. Vlad Gerasimov is a photographer from Irkutsk (near Lake Baikal) who has documented the haunting beauty of the wooden architecture in his home town. He has created a photo gallery from which prints can be purchased. Wooden architecture can be seen all over Eastern Europe, with regional styles preserved in residential buildings or religious structures.

Tomsk is another Siberian city in which wooden architecture is common, but efforts to preserve 100-plus year-old buildings are not underway in any broad respect. In the northwest of Russia, however, wooden architecture is carefully preserved on Kizhi Island. In the Bucovina region of Romania, while the Painted Monasteries are the major attraction, visitors can also see examples of wooden architecture particular to the area.
