Sljivovica, Serbian Plum Rakija

Sunday October 26, 2008
One of the perks of travel is sampling the local spirits. Southeastern Europeans savor their rakia (also spelled rakija), a strong alcohol made from fruit. Similar to brandy, rakia can be made from apricots, grapes, pears, berries, or other fruits. Both homemade and commercial versions can be sampled. Visit Palachinka for an illustrated explanation about how Serbian sljivovica, or plum rakia, is made at home. Not only will you get a crash course on rakia history, but you'll also learn the Serbian terms for the various elements that are part of the sljivovica-making process.
