Russian Holidays

Thursday January 1, 2009
January 1st is recognized in Russia as New Year's Day. But did you know that a second New Year is sometimes celebrated on January 14th? This day corresponds with the Julian calendar's New Year. This calendar was used in Russia prior to the Revolution, though Russia now uses the Gregorian calendar.

Tradition still holds that Christmas in Russia is most widely celebrated on January 7, which corresponds to December 25th according to the Julian calendar.
