Russian Culture Monday: Russian Spam

You may not know it, but you could be getting emails from Russians every day. Many of these emails probably end up directly in your junk folder, since Russia is reported to currently supply a full 22% of the world's email spam. An article at Russia! magazine gives some tips for how you can identify spam of Russian origin by paying attention to phrasing and punctuation. Of course, you can also identify an email of Russian origin if the address ends in ".ru." Other indicators include the use of Russian names in the email address and Cyrillic characters in the subject field of the email.

Most email users complain that filters can't block all spam messages, from Russia or anywhere else. If you're concerned about spam, you can follow some tips for fighting spam.

I set my spam filters to block anything that had the suspicious-looking letters ‘RU’ in it and now I don’t receive any spam emails at all! Not even ones selling me interesting things or genuinely offering me real cash prizes.

It just goes to show that you CAN be too careful.

Russian spam, Nigerian spam, US pharmacy spam … it all is spam, I do in all honesty not worry too much about where it comes from, it gets terminated with extreme prejudice. Because I do not want to meet voluptuous Ksenia, wouldn’t take ten percent of a poor royal orphan’s heritage and frankly am quite satisfied with things as they are.

But I am happy to recommend http://www.419eater.com/ for further reading …

Well, I’ve been lucky so far I guess. I can’t block ru because of friends in eastern Ukraine and Moscow particularly. So, cross my fingers.

Thanks for the warning – I had no idea.
