A segment on NPR's Morning Edition today, entitled Wave of Violence Strikes Eastern Europe's Gypsies, describes an increase in violence towards members of the Roma in Eastern Europe. Intolerance towards Eastern and East Central Europe's Roma population has been a long-standing problem, but increased social tension between the Roma and other populations comes as a byproduct of rising economic tension.
Hungary is one country that has exhibited an increase in violence towards its Roma population, and BBC has reported on the growing marginalization of Hungary's Roma. Even political parties are taking a stance against this minority population. Unfortunately, organized efforts to create problems for the Roma make finding a solution to the problem of intolerance even more difficult.
