
Rila Monastery is the largest monastery in Bulgaria. Located in the Rila Mountains, it is also a popular pilgrimage site. Over the past year, Rila Monastery has welcomed over 1 million visitors who are attracted to the monastery for its religious importance and its historical significance, and to the national park in which it is located. Those who visit Rila Monastery can visit the museum there, see the cave where John of Rila (whose students built the monastery) sheltered for years, examine the frescoes and icons of the Rila Monastery church, and even overnight in a monk's cell.
