Russian patronymics are usually the most difficult aspect of Russian names for English speakers. The patronymic, derived from an individual's father's first name, takes the place of the middle name but is used more often than middle names are in the West. In addition, brothers and sisters will share the same patronymic (if they share a father), but their patronymics will carry different endings depending upon their gender.
Getting acquainted with the formation and use of patronymics in Russia is an important aspect of Russian culture and will help to minimize confusion when interacting with Russians, watching Russian films, or reading Russian literature.
