Eight countries in Eastern Europe and East Central Europe belong to the Schengen Area, a border-free territory with Europe. Visitors to the Schengen Area must go through passport/border controls upon first entry into the territory, but they may travel within the Schengen Area (meaning they can visit any of the countries within the area) without having to go through further checks. Most visitors require only a short-stay visa--the stamp that border security issues upon entry to the Schengen Area. A short-stay visa allows Americans to visit the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a six-month period.
