Suceava is not as large as other destination cities in Romania, but it's an important hub for exploring the rest of Bucovina, a culturally, historically, and architecturally rich region. Bucovina's painted monasteries, extensively decorated with exterior frescoes, are only one of the area's main features. Visitors who plan their trip carefully can also snoop around the ruins of a fortress, learn about traditional life in an open-air museum, and go hiking in the mountains.
