The observance of St. Nicholas Day in Eastern Europe means children get two opportunities for visits from a Santa-like figure during the holiday season. On this day, children may receive small candies or gifts, and in certain cities costumed actors distribute treats. Some of the day's festivities take place on the Eve of St. Nicholas (December 5), sometimes the day is celebrated on December 6th, and in Orthodox countries the day is marked on December 19th.
