Bosnian Pyramids: What Are They?:
The so-called Bosnian Pyramids are (or are located in) hills in the Bosnian town of Visoko. Visoko means "high," and the main hill in Visoko is called "Visocica." An amateur archeologist by the name of Semir Osmanagic believes that hidden under Visocica hill is a pyramid built by an ancient civilization. However, many archeologists feel that this claim is not based upon archeological fact.
Bosnian Pyramids: Location:
The Bosnian Pyramids are located more or less in the center of Bosnia and Herzegovina, north of Sarajevo. The Bosnian Pyramids are called the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, and are located near each other in Visoko.
Bosnian Pyramids: Getting to Visoko:
Visoko is easy to get to from Sarajevo. Regular bus routes take passengers from and to Sarajevo and Visoko. The town is only about 30km north of Sarajevo, so the bus ride will be neither too long nor too expensive if you just want to take a day trip to see the Bosnian Pyramids.
Bosnian Pyramids: Taking a Tour:
Various Bosnian tour companies will include the Bosnian Pyramids as a part of their schedules, but it's also possible to book tours for the Pyramids only. Tours usually include both the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, as well as some parts of the archeological dig sites.
Bosnian Pyramids: The Town of Visoko:
Visoko is not a huge town, but it's not so tiny that you won't find some interesting places to dine or shop. Locals wasted no time in capitalizing on the opportunity to hawk souvenirs of the Bosnian Pyramids to tourists, so be sure to pick up some kitschy Bosnian Pyramid key chains or t-shirts while you're there.
Bosnian Pyramids: Real or Just a Joke?:
Most professional archeologists are concerned about the amateurs digging up a real archeologically important site in search of something that doesn't exist. Roman and medieval ruins exist on Visocica Hill, and amateurs may be damaging authentic artifacts while they dig up "evidence" to support their claims.
Bosnian Pyramids: Boon to Visoko:
Whether or not the Bosnian Pyramids or real, it matters little to the tourists or the locals who benefit from the many international visitors to come and see the European Pyramids in Bosnia. Visoko was relatively unheard of before the "discovery" of the Pyramids. If you're in the vicinity and want to pop on over to see what all of the hype is about, there will be plenty of tour agents, drivers, souvenir-sellers, and other business-minded people willing to help you out and make the most of your visit.
