Porec (pronounced POR-etch) is a Croatian city on the Istrian Peninsula with a 2,000 year-old history. Known to have been inhabited in prehistoric times, and then developing as a Roman city, Porec saw early Christian settlement. A 6th century basilica stands on the site of an earlier 4th century Christian structure, linking Porec architecturally with its past. Today, Porec is a popular stop on any tour of Istria and witnesses its peak season during the summer months.

The Euphrasian Basilica, a Croatian World Heritage Site, is the most important attraction in Porec. This 6th century religious structure impresses with colorful and glittering mosaics, which are excellent surviving examples of Byzantine art. Visitors to Porec can also identify the site of a Roman temple, Romanesque architecture, and defense towers from the 15th century.
