Diocletian's Palace Wall - Remains of East Wall

While much of the wall of Diocletian's Palace remains intact, some portions of it have been pulled down. This image shows where the original wall once stood without interruption - the step-like stone protrusion to the right of the photo is what is left of this part of the wall.

Relatively newer structures are pictured in the background. Because they open up onto a square, the evidence that a wall once enclosed the area is not immediately detectable.

The west wall of the palace has seen the most damage because, as the city grew, parts of this this wall were removed to provide easy access to Split's new buildings. The palace was entered on this side by the Western Gate, or Iron Gate, which still stands.
