The House of the Black Madonna, designed by Josef Gocar during the beginning of the 20th century, houses Prague's Museum of Cubism. Being a deliberate example of Cubist architecture itself, the House of the Black Madonna was originally intended to be a department store. One of the architect's most challenging obstacles during the project was to design a building that would harmonize with its ancient surroundings - thus the first design was scrapped and a second, softer, design was approved for construction.
