Carnival in Estonia - Vastlapaev

Estonian Shrove Tuesday Festival

By , About.com Guide

In Estonia, Shrove Tuesday Carnival is known as Vastlapaev (Vastlapäev). The pre-Lenten Carnival is marked with special foods and traditions.

Estonian Vastlapaev Traditions

Estonians most widely celebrate Shrove Tuesday with foods like pea soup, pork, and buns with whipped cream.

Other traditions include special activities and games. Sledding is popularly enjoyed on Carnival – the length of the slide down an icy hill is said to predict the level of success the sledder will have in the following year. A yo-yo made from pork bones serves as a traditional toy. And an effigy that must be driven out of town is created to banish winter.
