By Kerry Kubilius, About.com

Lake Balaton - Lake Balaton Overview:

Hungary's Lake Balaton, as the largest lake in Central Europe, attracts visitors Hungary, neighboring countries, and around the world. Its beaches are mostly man-made, and may be grassy instead of sandy, but the water is accessible and warm in the summer months. During winter, skating and ice fishing are popular activities for off-season visitors.

Lake Balaton - Resorts and Shores:

Siofek, on Balaton's south shore, is known for its bars, dance clubs, and party atmosphere. Visit Kishegy if you love wine - the surrounding region makes up the fifth largest wine region in Hungary. The northern shore, including Balatonfured, is less attractive to young adults on school break. Keszthely is home to the Festetics Palace as well as several museums, offering visitors the more historical side of Balaton

Lake Balaton - Activities:

Lake Balaton's summer season is full of activities, including swim competitions, folklore and music performances, and beer and wine festivals. Visitors can also participate in waters sports, horseback riding, wine tasting, bird-watching, and sightseeing. Health spas are also a part of Lake Balaton's resort atmosphere, for which visitors should make reservations in advance.
