Hungary's Two Regimes of Terror:
The Terror House in Budapest is a necessary memorial museum to Hungarian victims of terror who were tortured, beaten, killed, or starved by supporting members of two of Hungary's most frightening regimes - that of the Nazis in the early 1940's, and that of the Soviets, until 1956. While executions did not take place in the Terror House building, hundreds of people were effectively killed by the horrific conditions at the Terror House.
Four Floors Recreate Foreign Governments' Reigns:
The Terror House has four floors - basement, ground floor, first floor, and second floor. The museum reveals, in the thorough exhibitions, what life was like for people under both German Nazis and Russian Soviets. The basement contains cells where torture took place - including a room in which oxygen was shut off to the occupant and a room where the occupant was made to sit or stand in water.
Exhibitions in the Terror House:
Visitors to the Terror House will view photographs of those who were held as prisoners, discover what conditions were like in a gulag, and experience period propoganda.
Terror House Design:
The building was renovated (after having been used as offices and a club) to recreate a space that would stay true to the intent of the Terror House. Musical compositions and the interior renovation was completed by Hungarians to boost the effects of the museum. The Terror House is a multi-sensory experience that takes visitors beyond the visual and seeks to emphasize the importance of remembering this time in Hungary's history.
