The premise Slogging the Slavs may seem, at first, an unlikely combination of two diverse concepts that have no right to mingle - Eastern Europe and the British sport, cricket. However, it is exactly this bizarre combination that makes Slogging the Slavs so wonderful. Not only does it give the author a reason to travel into rural Eastern Europe to engage in cricket matches with locals, students, professionals, and fellow travelers, it makes a great story.
A Glimpse into Rural and City Life of Eastern Europe
Angus Bell doesn't do Eastern Europe half way. He takes readers through Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Belarus, Lithuania, Poland, and Estonia. Readers will vicariously visit both rural towns and cities and encounter accomodating locals, helpful hitchhikers, and lots of individuals with lazy eyes.
What about the Paranormal Aspect of Slogging the Slavs?
The author is prompted to go on his cricket tour across Eastern Europe on the advice of a psychic. However, the paranormal encounters don't stop there. A witch in Tallinn, a hotel owner with a body (possibly) buried in his yard, and the ghost of Bell's dead Uncle Ivor cranks the story up a fantastic notch.
But I Don't Know Anything about Cricket!
Neither do I - even after reading the book. If you don't know anything about cricket, you will either find yourself an avid learner or adjust to the lingo and stick to travel parts of the book. If you like cricket, however, Slogging the Slavs puts a whole new twist on the sport. This book wouldn't have happened without cricket. Still lost? Consult this dictionary of cricket terms.
