Camping in Eastern Europe - Eastern Europe Camping Considerations

By Kerry Kubilius, About.com

Camping in Eastern Europe - Know What to Expect:
In the West, camping is not often done without certain available amenities - tents, ovens, all-weather gear. In Eastern Europe, the camping situation may be drastically different, especially if you plan on camping with locals. Eastern Europeans love nature, and most don't think anything of "roughing it." If you go camping with Eastern Europeans, you'll most likely find yourself out in the middle of nowhere with the barest of essentials.
Camping in Eastern Europe - Camping Locations and Campsites:
Designated campsites may be less common in Eastern Europe than in the US or other countries, but they do exist. Vast tracts of untouched and uninhabited land means that you may be able to camp out almost anywhere without being disturbed or even noticed. However, avoid camping on land that you know belongs to someone unless you have permission, and if you're asked to move, do so without hesitation. If you aren't aware of designated campsites in the area, ask the locals where you can safely pitch a tent and light a fire.
Camping in Eastern Europe - Camping Essentials:
Because Eastern Europeans may not mind the elements as much, if you plan on camping while traveling in Eastern Europe, do bring those essentials that you know will make you more comfortable. Sunscreen and bug repellent are must-haves, but if you have all-weather clothing or other camping gear, pack it in your suitcase before you board the plane.
Camping in Eastern Europe - Camping Safety:
It's a good idea to camp with someone who is familiar with the area where you plan to stay. He or she will speak the local language if you are disturbed or asked to leave. And, as you may be out of range of mobile phone lines, a local individual may be able to get help if a the need arises and arrange for transportation to and from the campsite.
Camping in Eastern Europe - Hygiene While Camping:
Because designated campsites may not be available, "shower" may mean "stream," and "toilet" may mean "tree." You may want to bring moist towelettes and toilet paper with you. Some campsites may offer a steam room or sauna. This may seem like an unusual way to bathe, but it can be wonderfully refreshing and relaxing, especially if the weather has been a bit chilly.
