National Identity in Belarus:
Belarus has struggled for decades to establish an internationally recognized identity. Known as Belarussia in Soviet times, the people of Belarus find this name an unpleasant reminder of Russification.
Facts about Belarus:
  • This landlocked country is bordered by Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, and Russia, which makes it unmistakably part of Eastern Europe.
  • Cold winters make Belarus inhospitable for unacclimated visitors, so it's best to explore Belarus during the summer months when warmer weather prevails.
  • Belarusian and Russian are two languages spoken most frequently in Belarus. Russian speakers will most likely be able to get by without much problem.
WWII Monuments in Belarus:
Eastern Europe has its fair share of WWII monuments to memorialize fallen soldiers, and Belarus is no different. Brest Fortress has become a memorial for soldiers who died without surrender while being surrounded by the German army.
Natural Landscape of Belarus:
Belavheza Park crosses the border of Belarus into Poland. It is described as "the last piece of primeval forest" in Europe. Here you will find buffalo, expansive pine forests, and beautiful lakes. Belarus is great for nature lovers!
Castles and Churches in Belarus:
Like all Eastern European countries, Belarus takes pride in the preservation of historical architecture and monuments. Mir Castle, the past residence of a wealthy family, is famous for its Belorusian architecture. Orthodox and Catholic churches are also prominent throughout Belarus.
