Czestochowa (pronounced Chenss-toh-hoh'-va) is a city in Poland that is home to the nation's most important religious relic: the Black Madonna. The Black Madonna is a centuries-old icon depicting the Virgin Mary with two scars on her face. The icon is attributed to miracles and is displayed on a Baroque alter in a chapel in Jasna Gora monastery.

Czestochowa, the Black Madonna, and Jasna Gora Monastery

Jasna Gora monastery, because of its responsibility for the Black Madonna's safe keeping, is a fortified monastery that has grown in its importance as a pilgrimage site in Poland. The devout have been known to walk for miles to reach Jasna Gora, where they pray in the presence of the holy relic. Donations have made the monastery rich, and the details of the monastery, like its 103-meter tall bell tower, statues of saints, and potted flowers, make it a delight to visit.

The Black Madonna, of course, is the main draw in both Jasna Gora and Czestochowa, and the monastery has made it straightforward for tourists to catch a glimpse of it. You don't have to press through the crowds of worshipers to see the icon; a special route through the Chapel of the Virgin enables non-pilgrims to enter the chapel, snap a photo, and exit from the other side.

Other Sights in Czestochowa

Czestochowa's popularity centers around Jasna Gora, but if you explore the city, you'll find museums, galleries, shops, and structures that speak of the area's development. Its old center can be found at Main Market Square, and in this historic district, churches and other buildings from the past can be viewed.

Czestochowa has a railroad museum, a match manufacturing museum, and several art museums. A Jewish cemetery and an archeological excavation site are also of interest.

The area around Czestochowa is famous for its natural beauty, and medieval kings thought so, too. Castle ruins, like those of Olsztyn Castle lie a few miles outside of Czestochowa as a part of Poland's “Eagle's Nest” trail which linked many defensive structures together on a single route.
