Ground Floor of St. Mary's Church
The pale stone of St. Mary's Church holds in the cool air and makes a welcome retreat if you're visiting Gdansk during the summer months. The worn floor bears centuries' worth of marks from passing feet. Although St. Mary's Church has undergone restoration, original church artifacts are still on display, including a church organ, a 15th century pieta, various alters, and a surprising astronomical clock.

Tower of St. Mary's Church
Before you can climb the spiral staircase to the tower of St. Mary's Church, you'll have to pay about 2 USD to the attendant. Do be warned, though, that the stairs are narrow, the stone is slick, and you will climb, and climb . . . and climb before you reach the top. There are abouta 470 stairs total from ground to tower, and even fit individuals can reach the lookout platform out of breath. Once there, you'll be thrilled by the city panorama and all of its historical landmarks.
While going down is physically easier, it may not be pleasant for those with fears of heights. It is essential that you watch where you put your feet while descending the narrow, twisting passageway, which means you're confronted with the dark shadows of hidden stairs. If in doubt, allow someone else to lead the way.
