How to Buy a Train Ticket in Poland

By , About.com Guide

To travel by train in Poland, you'll have to know how to buy a train ticket. Even if you speak little or no Polish, purchasing a train ticket isn't difficult.

1. Where to Buy the Ticket

Purchase Polish train tickets at any train station's ticket counter. These are usually manned by women; the ticket sellers in larger train stations are more used to assisting foreigners, but regardless of where you purchase your ticket, they will help you as best they can.

2. Stand in Line

Stand in line and move up as the line moves up. If it is not apparent that you are standing in line, you will find yourself moving farther away from the ticket counter as other travelers fill the space in front of you.

3. Write Down Your Request

The best way to communicate clearly what type of ticket you want is by writing down the date you want to travel, the approximate time you would like to depart, and your destination city/station. If you know an express train runs to your destination city, you can specify “express” - the ticket seller will know you want a fast train with few stops.

4. Pay for Your Ticket

The ticket seller will show you the cost of the ticket, knowing you won't understand her. Pay for the ticket using cash or a major credit card. There may be a discount for students (with proper ID) under the age of 26. Show your passport or driver's license if you need to indicate that you are 26 years old or under.

5. Examine Your Ticket

Take a look at your ticket. It should show you the time of departure/arrival, the your wagon number, your seat number, and your cities of departure/arrival. If you have any questions about any of these, or if you need to ask a related question, use the information desk at the train station.
