Romanian History - King Decebal or Decebalus
Monument to Dacian King Decebalus
Falk Kienas © 2006
This monument of King Decebal or Decebalus was completed in 2004 and overlooks the Danube. King Decebalus was a Dacian king who was defeated by the Romans in the 2nd century, making Dacia a province of Rome. The Roman Empire's hold on the region was short-lived, however, and Goths eventually replaced them, mingling with the people who were already established in what is today Romania. Today, many Romanians are familiar, and proud of, their Dacian heritage, which makes them unique among the neighboring communities.
