Rostov Veliky History
Rostov Veliky, often just called Rostov, is one of the oldest Russian cities, first mentioned in the 9th century. It preserves the medieval greatness it was known for even though Rostov-on-Don, the city that shares its name, has grown in size and reputation in comparison to this ancient outpost.Rostov Veliky was once rules by Yaroslav the Wise of Kievan Rus and by his son. The Rostov Veliky Kremlin is a must-see sight, the memory of which will stick in any traveler’s mind. The kremlin, surrounded by white, decorative walls, dates to the 17th century even though it was originally founded five centuries earlier. Clusters of domes rise above the walls, signifying the presence of churches within. Explore these as well as other structures within the complex.- The Assumption Cathedral predates the kremlin and is an important feature of this sight. Its belfry is hung with 15 bells rung expertly by Orthodox monks. Other churches within the kremlin’s walls include the Gate-Church of St. John the Divine, the Gate-Church of the Resurrection, and the Church of Hodigitria with its exhibit dedicated to religious garments and accoutrements.
- The metropolitan’s chambers, which include his private chapel and the so-called White and Red Chambers, each with their own exhibits relevant to Rostov’s history. The White Chamber is filled with Orthodox artifacts, while the Red Chamber showcases of one of the local crafts, finift, a type of enamelware. The chapel itself is beautifully decorated in honor of the venerable religious leader who prayed here, so be sure to take your time viewing the frescoes.
Two monasteries, the Monastery of St. Jacob and the Monastery of St. Avraam are also located in Rostov. The former is a neoclassical cluster of buildings and the latter is said to be one of the oldest monasteries in Russia.
Events in Rostov
As a popular destination for travelers, Rostov Veliky hosts several festivals and events, especially through the high tourist season. The end of August sees a traditional crafts fair, which coincides with the day of the town. Rostov is celebrated with a calendar of events and fireworks. Rostov Veliky is located between Moscow and Yaroslavl. It’s a popular destination outside the capital with both locals and tourists.
