Yaroslavl is one of Russia's ancient cities and full of historic charm. Today, Yaroslavl looks forward to its part as host city of the 2018 World Cup.

Yaroslavl History

Yaroslavl has a 1000-year history and is named for Yaroslav the Wise, the Kievan prince responsible for bringing Christianity to Rus. Yaroslavl is said to have been founded when Yaroslav visited the settlement and killed the local's sacred bear with an ax.

During a surge in development during the 16th and 17th centuries, Yaroslavl rivaled Moscow in size and grandeur. Yaroslavl's oldest structures date from this time and lend the city the air of old Russia so prized in modern times.

Sights in Yaroslavl

Fittingly, a monument to Yaroslav the Wise graces the center of the square opposite the Yaroslavl Kremlin, part of the Russian World Heritage Site in the historic center. Churches, museums, and the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior round out the sights visitors can expect to be be enchanted by in Yaroslavl.
