Yaroslavl has a 1000-year history and is named for Yaroslav the Wise, the Kievan prince responsible for bringing Christianity to Rus. Yaroslavl is said to have been founded when Yaroslav visited the settlement and killed the local's sacred bear with an ax.During a surge in development during the 16th and 17th centuries, Yaroslavl rivaled Moscow in size and grandeur.
