Café Underground is one of the most comfortable and unique café-bars in the Siberian city of Tomsk. The staff is friendly, the drinks are tasty, and the atmosphere is artsy without being arrogant. Great for lunch or drinks with friends in the evening, it will be one of your favorite hang-outs in this famous university city.

Atmosphere

Café Underground is—literally—underground. It occupies the basement level of a commercial building on Prospekt Lenina. When you enter, you are immediately confronted by a giant, sculpted nose. Similarly, huge eyes will watch you on the interior, right next to the projector screen. Underground constantly has silent film reels, music videos, or independent movies playing, which is all part and parcel of the cool, multi-media ambiance. There is always some smooth jazz or light rock music playing, but never so loudly that you can’t carry on a conversation with your friends. It’s easy to make yourself comfortable at one of the intimately lit tables or on the white leather couches.

Service and Menu

The staff at Café Underground are always pleasant—even if your Russian is poor. You may not be able to carry on a conversation with them, but they’ll work with you to understand what you want off their diverse menu. From teas and coffees, to beers, cocktails, and shots, it’s easy to relax, study, or celebrate at Underground. Available as well are various soups and salads, as well as desserts including ice cream. If you go during lunch time, you’ll get a 20% discount on your meal!

Music

One of the most exciting aspects of Underground is the attached music shop that goes by the same name. Leave your drinks (and a couple of your friends) at your table, and wander over to check out the international selection of music. All the prices are clearly labeled and tend to be on the pleasantly affordable side. You can pick up anything from Depeche Mode to the latest Brothers Grimm.

Cafe Underground has a contemporary charm that seems out-of-place in the ancient city of Tomsk. But after a day of exploring old churches and taking pictures of 19th century buildings, the modern feel of Underground is a delightful change.
