Definition: A samovar is a traditional device used to heat water for tea. The word "samovar" in Russian means "boils itself." Samovars can be found in homes throughout Russia and other Eastern European nations, as well as in Central Asia.

A samovar is usually made of metal (some decorative samovars are made of other materials) and has an electric heating element. A spout near the bottom of the samovar releases boiling water. Samovars are so typical in Russia that even trains offer water for tea kept hot by a samovar.
