What is Lomonosov Porcelain?:

Lomonosov porcelain is porcelain made at the historic Lomonosov porcelain factory. Often decorated blue, white, and gold, this porcelain is famous in Russia. Purchased in full sets or single items, Lomonsov porcelain makes a wonderful Russian souvenir or special gift.

History of Lomonosov Porcelain:

The Lomonosov Porcelain Factory was founded in 1744. Dmitry Vinogradov was given the task of making a hard porcelain akin to bone China - the recipe of which was not known in Russia. Vinogradov succeeded and the factory produced dinnerware sets for royalty only. These sets were made to order in small quantities and were decorated in gold, flowers, initials, and other designs.

Where to See Lomonosov Porcelain:

Lomonosov Porcelain can be seen at the original factory outlets today, but the oldest and most elaborate pieces can be found at St. Petersburg's Hermitage Museum. The porcelain exhibit there has pieces from Vinogradov's very first attempts at making porcelain, as well as dinnerware that was placed before tsars and tsarinas.

How to Identify Lomonsov Porcelain:

Lomonosov Porcelain has a stamp on the bottom that identifies it as authentic. You will see the imperial double-headed eagle, the date 1744, along with the words "St. Petersburg." Lomonosov porcelain is hand-painted. The most popular design is the blue, white, and gold cross-hatch design. However, you will also find flowers and folkloric designs available.

Purchasing Lomonosov Porcelain:

Lomonosov Porcelain can, of course, be purchased in Russia. The prices are very affordable, but care must be taken in transporting these souvenirs back to your home country (best not to use the postal service).
