The Peter and Paul Fortress, built by Peter the Great in the 18th century, stands in infamy in Russian history. The prison cells of the Peter and Paul Fortress have held many a famous Russian writer and revolutionary over decades of tsarist rule and beyond.

The Peter and Paul Cathedral, a part of the complex of buildings that make up the Fortress, is marked by its spire, which can be seen at various points around St. Petersburg. Peter the Great once outlawed the construction of any building higher than the spire on the Peter and Paul Fortress.
