The Caucasus Mountains are referenced in Russian literature, such as Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time. The Western Caucasus is the portion of this mountain range protected as a World Heritage Site. Almost untouched by humans, the Western Caucasus supports diverse plant and animal wildlife.
