The Solovetsky Islands are located in the Arctic waters of the White Sea, in Russia's north. This Russian World Heritage site encompasses the cultural and historical ensemble there - primarily the Solovetsky Monastery. The monastery has been a site of religious observance, but it was also used as a prison as a part of the Gulag system in the past.
