Hotel Ukraina
Experience Soviet-Era Luxury

About.com Rating 4

By Kerry Kubilius, About.com

Hotel Ukraina is boasts the reputation of being one of seven "Stalinist Gothic" structures. Legend has it that Stalin himself approved the plans for this architectural echo of Kremlin might.

View and Atmosphere

Hotel Ukraina is the tallest hotel in Russia. It has an advantageous location, near Red Square and the government buildings. Any view of Moscow is spectacular, but Hotel Ukraina’s height and proximity to the Kremlin make the view from its windows almost cinematic. Don’t believe me? Ask Robert de Niro, one of the Hotel Ukraina’s famous guests.

With five restaurants, a bar, and a confectionary, you can eat and drink like a Duke or Duchess. And why not? Afterwards, you can retire to one of the 860 guest rooms, which are decorated in a swank, classic 1950’s style. Much of the atmosphere of that era has been preserved in the rich oak furnishings throughout the hotel, many of them original. Don’t be surprised to find your room decorated in lavish pink, with heavy curtain swags to frame the gorgeous view—Russian hotels, unlike hotels elsewhere that thrive on subdued beige and mauve, do not shy from their use of color.

Rates and Contact Information

Room rates are reasonable for Western travelers. You can rent a room for about $100 USD per night. While you might not want to spend your whole stay in Moscow at the Ukraina, this hotel would be perfect if you plan on completing a day-tour of the Kremlin with a significant other, or if you have business nearby.
