Petersburg is often used as a short form of the city named St. Petersburg or Saint Petersburg, Russia. Someone very familiar with Russia might say, "I traveled to Moscow and Petersburg last summer." The name of Petersburg might be shortened even further to just "Peter," though this is more common in Russian language.

Petersburg was founded by Peter the Great, from which the name Petersburg (Peter's city), comes.
