Where I Traveled and Why
My husband and I were in Copenhagen for school in the summer of '08. Some of the European students encouraged us to spend a weekend in Riga, Latvia. At the time, Riga hadn't been discovered by Americans--I don't remember hearing much, if any, English spoken.
We stayed in an old convent which had been turned into a hotel in the Old Town, and we also took a walking tour, which ventured into the working areas of the city.
Highlights of My Trip
One of the most interesting parts was seeing the everyday Riga. Some areas were still too poor to rebuild after Soviet occupation and remained run-down. And yet, most of the city is fairly cosmopolitan and nicely designed.
The spirit and energy of the residents impressed me. Here was a country who fought off the Soviets until the bitter end, and they truly relish their newfound autonomy. It was refreshing.
Advice
- Old Town Riga is tourist-friendly, but to truly get a feel for the city, find a walking tour that will lead you through the actual city. Or, explore on your own.
- Eat at the Garlic Pub!
- If you are unfamiliar with the Soviets' final stronghold on the Baltics, the Soviet Occupation Museum gives a good overview, and was free when we visited.
