Trip to Four Major Cities: Budapest

Where I Traveled and Why

When I flew to Berlin in October of 2009 to see Keith Jarrett in concert, I knew I would be back in Europe soon. Being a native Floridian, Europe simply blew me away with its grandiose architecture, peaceful postcard like surroundings and its laid back, friendly attitude.

So after a few months of planning this spring, I finally made it back to Europe in June. I settled on Budapest, Krakow, Prague and Bucharest. Why this route? I feel that 2 weeks in 4 major European cities would be enough to see the major attractions and understand their custom and culture along with their way of life.

Highlights of My Trip

The folks at Budapest are the friendliest and laid back. Its quite refreshing to see the drivers stop for the pedestrians. After the first day, I realized I didn’t have to run across the streets. Also, I did not see a single driver texting while driving; the roads are too narrow for that. Definitely get a few bowls of Hungarian Goulash soup. Beef, onions, potatoes, carrots - I am drooling just thinking about it. Decided one evening to hike up to Castle Hill and take some night pictures of Budapest; I was a bit intimidated thinking I might be the only person there. To my surprise, there were more tourists there at night than during the day. Which tourist would not want to snap pictures of the Hungarian Parliament, Chain Bridge and the Danube at night? A very safe city and the least inexpensive, I was able to get 2 croissants, 2 donuts and an orange juice for about $2.50 usd for breakfast.

Advice

  • Contrary to the rumors on the net, I felt very safe and at ease taking the night train from Budapest to Krakow. By taking the night train, I arrived in Krakow early in the morning and thus gained an entire day to sightsee Krakow.
  • Try to stay at a hostel near Vaci Street, from there you are within walking distance to all the major attractions.
  • The bus ride from Ferihegy International Airport to city center is a bit rough, do not get discourage by it.
  • Not all restaurants in Vaci Street are tourists traps, there a few low key types with great food.
