What is your blog about?
Siberian Light is my personal blog about all things Russia. I'm particularly interested in international affairs and security, so that tends to get quite a lot of coverage. I also cover Russian sport (especially Russian rugby) fairly extensively. Living in London, there's also coverage of events linking Russia and the UK.
A unique feature of SL is my weekly roundup of blog posts about Russia from other blogs.
Why did you start your blog?
I started SL back in 2004 (its one of the oldest English language blogs about Russia) to help get my head around my coursework (I was doing an MA in International Security, with a focus on Russian foreign policy at the time). It also helped me to keep in touch with Russia following my year there as a student in 2003.
Advice
- Don't be scared - Russia is full of friendly people who will help you if you get stuck (honestly!)
- Visit Siberia for a glimpse of life outside of the big cities of Moscow and St Petersburg.
- If you have time, take the train instead of flying.
